Growing presence of the Spanish Ministry of Defense in Extraco’s contract portfolio
The Spanish Ministry of Defense is gaining increasing weight in Extraco’s portfolio of projects. According to the Rearme 2022–2024 report prepared by the National Security Observatory, the company ranked 19th among the main contractors awarded equipment investment contracts by the Ministry during that period.
The report lists the top 100 contractors. Extraco appears in connection with the joint venture it formed with the Granada-based company Vivendio Sostenibilidad Energética to build the main campus of the Technology Development and Experimentation Center in Jaén.
The complex will include five buildings dedicated to experimentation and development in three key areas: autonomous and connected vehicles, anti-drone systems, and artificial intelligence—technologies considered strategic and dual-use for security and defense.
Work on the project, which covers 80,500 square meters, is already underway, with earthworks completed and foundation construction in progress.
In addition to this major project, the Ministry of Defense has recently awarded Extraco several other contracts. These include the refurbishment and extension of the drone take-off and landing strip at the El Ferral firing and maneuvering range at the Conde de Gazola base in León; the adaptation of facilities at the military residence in Guipúzcoa to house the headquarters of the Defense Subdelegation; and the renovation of Building 3, the Operations Center, and annexed facilities at the UN base in Quart de Poblet (Valencia). A few months ago, the company also completed energy-efficiency improvements at the Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital in Madrid.
The most recent contract, awarded in 2026, involves drafting the project and carrying out urbanization works for the new headquarters of the Tercio Viejo de Sicilia regiment in San Sebastián.
