EXTRACO won the second prize in the “I Contest of Innovative Materials of Galicia”, organized by the Galician Innovation Agency-GAIN, through the Materioteca de Galicia. The concretes and mortars made with Galician bivalve shells, developed by EXTRACO with the companies Galaicontrol and Serumano, together with the Construction Group (gCONS) of the University of A Coruña (UDC) were one of the two finalist proposals in the Company-Research category. These materials are the result of the R&D&I project “BIOVALVO”, co-funded by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI)-Ministry of Science and Innovation, between 2013 and 2015 (Ref. ITC-20133094).

Sustainability and orientation towards circular economy were the common elements in the four winning materials, selected from among the 80 applications submitted, organized in the categories of crafts, companies, knowledge centers and mixed company-research consortiums.

The closing ceremony of the contest took place at the CIS Technology and Design facilities in Ferrol on November 3, coinciding with the celebration of the World Materials Day. The event was presided over by Patricia Argerey, director of GAIN, who presented the winners with a commemorative bell-shaped glass, specially designed for the occasion and made of polymers printed with 3D technology.

During the event, a publication with interviews with the creators of the selected materials and finalists was presented to contribute to the public dissemination of the efforts made by Galician professionals, companies and knowledge centers in the field of R&D&I in innovative materials.
