An R&D&i Extraco project, in the Journal Construction of Engineering and Management

The prestigious international Journal Construction of Engineering and Management includes, in one of its latest issues, an article with the results of the research projects in which Extraco takes part, specifically about the potentiality of use of ground-penetrating radar equipment for the control of civil engineering works in the railway sector.

The company’s head of R&D&i, Francisco Javier Prego, signs the article together with three professors from the University of Vigo, who belong to the research group of Applied Geotechnologies from the Schools of Mining and Industrial Engineers.

The project to which the information refers covers the application of innovative technologies to the management and survey of infrastructures, and aims to improve safety on roads and other transport infrastructures, reducing their maintenance costs. Researchers designed software and technologies that were placed, along with other measurement systems, in a survey prototype vehicle that compiles all kinds of data while moving, thanks to sensors such as laser scanners, infrared thermography, photogrammetry and ground-penetrating radars, among others. All this information is sent afterwards to a georeferenced database in a central computer, where all systems are synchronized in order to allow for the production of a diagnosis of the real situation of each infrastructure.

The published article focuses on the analysis of the potentiality of ground-penetrating radar survey techniques in the field of railway tunnels, and is entitled “Assessing the applicability of Ground-Penetrating Radar to quality control in tunneling construction”

The Journal Construction of Engineering and Management, edited by the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), is indexed in the JCR (Journal Citation Report), a quality indicator valued by evaluation bodies of research activity worldwide.
