Research for the use of residual ashes from thermal power plants in civil works and building

A project for the valuation of thermal power plants’ ashes in the fields of civil works and building. This is one of the R&D initiatives in which Extraco participates, selected in the call for R&D grants Conectapeme 2016 ofthe Galician Innovation Agency (AxenciaGalega de Innovación, GAIN)by Xunta de Galicia’s Consellería de Economía, Emprego e Industria, which is funded by the European Union’s EDFR Funds (Project code: IN852A 2016/178).

Under the name of “Project Cinderella”, the main goal of this research is to use bottom ashes(produced in Galician thermal power plants) for the production of mortar, concrete, precast elements and bituminous mixes, allowing the valuation of this industrial waste.

Along with Extraco three other Galician companies develop this initiative,in collaboration with two research groups from the universities of A Coruña (UDC)and Santiago de Compostela (USC), specifically the Construction Group GConsfrom UDC’sHigher Technical School of Engineering of Roads, Canals and Ports and the Civil Engineering and Marine Energy Research Group(GICEMA) from Lugo’s Higher Polytechnic School(USC).

The project started in February 2016 and will continue its development until November 2018.
