The construction works of Youth Detention Center Basilio Lakas in María Chiquita, in the Panamanian province of Colon, carried out by Extraco as part of a consortium with Lakas and Domar, is making good progress. The Minister of the Government, María Luisa Romero, visited the premises a few days ago, along with the bishop of the Diocese of Colón and Kuna Yala, Monsignor Manuel Ochogavía, to check up on the progress of the works.

This youth detention center will have a capacity to host 72 people and three dormitories, a school, a checkpoint, a clinic, a kitchen and a cafeteria, a multipurpose court/soccer field, a chapel and watchtowers.

Apart from the works, the consortium of companies took care of designing the project, obtaining the corresponding municipal permit and performing the environmental impact assessment.

The Government explained that the aim of the construction of this modern detention center is to create the proper infrastructure to allow teenagers to continue their education and learn new skills that allow them to re-enter society.
