Extraco: a leader in the structural rehabilitation of bridges in Portugal
In the last few years, Extraco has specialized in the rehabilitation of bridges, both old constructions and very recent infrastructures, as part of its growing activity in Portugal.
Thus, it is currently undertaking four projects in this area:
- Comprehensive reinforcement of the Marateca bridge (Southern Line of Infraestruturas de Portugal), which has developed significant pathologies after half a century of service.
- Rehabilitation of the Vascão metal bridge. Widespread corrosion and the strength of the steel, manufactured almost 80 years ago, make it advisable to completely replace the deck.
- Ferradosa viaduct and bridge. The major drawback is that the work must be carried out while keeping both infrastructures in service.
- Reinforcement of the foundations of the O Tejo bridge, built in 1889 for the Guarda-Abrantes railway.
Three other works have recently been awarded to Extraco:
- Complete refurbishment of the San Miguel bridge in Lousada (Porto). The reinforced concrete slab will need to be replaced with a new one, which will require the installation of micropiles to ensure the load-bearing capacity of the ground on the banks of the Barrosas river.
- Two large bridges crossing the Vigia dam, in Vale das Moitas, with multiple pathologies that require urgent repair.
- Odelouca Viaduct, at the Autoestrada do Sul. A reinforced concrete viaduct with cracking problems in the deck, in the support elements and in some footings, aggravated by inadequate drainage.
Furthermore, there are a large number of viaducts that Extraco has restored in recent years throughout Portugal, such as the historic Rainha D. Amélia bridge, the A Praia bridge over the Tagus, the São João railway bridge in Porto, the A Praia bridge on the Beira Baixa railway line, the Cavez, Passos and Sabigode in Braga, the railway bridge over the river Âncora, the Criz I and Criz II viaducts, the Vala Nova bridge, the historic Dona Maria bridge in Lagos, the metal Belver bridge over the Tagus, the Escravilheira bridge, several pontoons in the district of Coimbra and the Pedorido bridge in Castelo de Paiva.
