EXTRACO shows its commitment to the environment in the workshop “Materials based on secondary raw materials”, organized by Axencia Galega de Innovación (GAIN)

Under the umbrella of the cycle “Sustainability and circularity of materials”, last April 28, the Axencia Galega de Innovación (GAIN) organized the workshop “Materials based on secondary raw materials” through the Materioteca de Galicia. EXTRACO was one of the speakers invited to the technical conference, held at CIS Tecnoloxía e Deseño in Ferrol (A Coruña), where they presented their experience in the design and validation of new construction materials developed in the R&D&i projects undertaken by the company in the last few years.

The use and maximization of waste from different sources for the creation of mortars and concretes highlight among the proposals presented by EXTRACO. Said waste includes mussel shells (BIOVALVO project. Ref. ITC-20133094); bottom ash from a thermal power plant (CENICIENTA project. Ref. IN852A 2016/178) and rejected filler from the company’s asphalt plants (ALFILLER project. Ref. IN852A 2018/39).

These lines of research prove the company’s high level of commitment to sustainability and the environment, within an international context (war in Ukraine) that has highlighted the high dependence of European economies on imported resources and materials. As a solution, the European Commission proposes to increase the recovery of critical raw materials from used products and the use of recycled materials, thus meeting part of the demand and reducing, at the same time, the increasingly complex extraction of natural resources.

Apart from EXTRACO, researchers from the Construction Group (gCONS) and the Roads, Geotechnics and Materials Group of the University of A Coruña, as well as the firms Rir&Co and Cholita Recicla, participated in the conference opened by Ms. María José Mariño, director of the GAIN Centers Area.
